Call the BBS

Host: bbs.unixtechlab.dev

ssh -p 2222 YOUR_BBS_USERNAME@bbs.unixtechlab.dev
 telnet bbs.unixtechlab.dev 23

Use your BBS username, not a Linux root account. Type NEW at the BBS login prompt to register. Choose ASCII/no color if your terminal cannot display ANSI. Typical screens use 80 columns and 24 rows.

Messages, games, files and polls are available from the terminal menus. Follow the menu on screen: X for games, T for files, J for message areas and O to log off.

IRC chat

Host: irc.unixtechlab.dev
TLS: TCP 6697 (recommended)
Legacy plaintext: TCP 6667

Choose a nickname and join #underground. Other channels include #retro, #linux, #homelab, #gaming, #projects, #events and #help.

BBS, IRC and Member Lounge accounts are separate. Never share a password in a channel. Plaintext connections expose messages and passwords on the network; use a separate low-value password and prefer a trusted local gateway for vintage computers.

Compatibility notes

Browser compatibility: Modern browsers force HTTPS for all .dev addresses using a built-in policy. This retro hostname now has a trusted certificate for those browsers. Plain HTTP remains available to clients that do not enforce that policy. A broadly usable HTTP-only address would need a domain without mandatory HTTPS.

This page uses basic HTML and ASCII text, without scripts, web fonts, animations or layout CSS. It works without JavaScript. The main site's browser terminal, browser IRC and live graphs require a modern browser.

This retro information site is available over unencrypted HTTP for older browsers. Do not enter passwords here. The modern website and browser chat use HTTPS; links to those services may require a newer browser. This site has no login forms, scripts or browser chat.

No physical dial-up modem service is available. Vintage hardware combinations have not all been tested. Online counts are on the modern site; this page does not invent live status.
